What is the SMS character limit and what happens with special characters? [Q1067]
A standard SMS supports up to 160 characters using GSM-7 encoding. If your message contains characters outside the basic GSM-7 set (such as certain accented characters, emojis, Arabic, Chinese, or other Unicode scripts), the encoding switches to UCS-2, which reduces the per-message limit to 70 characters. For multi-part Unicode SMS, each part carries up to 67 characters. ASPSMS supports concatenated SMS of up to 9 parts (1,377 characters for GSM-7; 630 characters for Unicode). To keep costs down, avoid unnecessary Unicode characters and review your character usage before sending.
